Staying abreast of the latest advances and innovative ideas emerging in a field as diverse as bioinformatics can be challenging. Since 2019, up to 10 notable outputs by our members are selected by the Award Committee for recognition as the SIB Remarkable Outputs. This annual shortlist includes peer-reviewed publications, software tools, databases and outreach initiatives. Year after year, it helps raise awareness of the importance of bioinformatics as a discipline.

An annual spotlight on the excellence and diversity of Swiss bioinformatics achievements

Over the years, the Remarkable Outputs have contributed to highlight a range of works by the SIB community:

  • Cross-disciplinary recognition: 34 different groups have seen their work selected, spanning the fields of systems biology and genetics, computational evolutionary genomics, personalized health informatics, populations genetics and evolutionary bioinformatics to cite only a few.
  • Diverse contributions: 23 research outputs, 31 tools, two data resources and three outreach outputs, including a public-engagement website and training resources.
  • Collaborative achievements: Nearly one in five of these distinguished outputs have emerged from collaborations across different SIB groups.

Top reasons to enter

If you are an SIB Member affiliated with an SIB Group and have contributed to exciting work, don't miss this opportunity to showcase it. Each SIB Group may submit one output only, and the selection is made by the SIB Award Committee.

If your work is selected, it will gain significant visibility within and beyond SIB:

  • Present your work at SIB Days 2027 or through a video featured across SIB channels (format to be confirmed).
  • Benefit from a dedicated communications campaign showcasing your work and the people behind it.
  • Be featured in the SIB Profile, our yearly report.
  • Receive a certificate recognizing your Remarkable Output.
  • Receive a digital badge to display on the selected tool, resource or webpage, where applicable.

Submission criteria and process

  • Any SIB Member affiliated with an SIB Group can submit an output. There is a maximum of one submission per SIB Group, so the choice of output should be discussed within and, where relevant, between groups prior to submission. Collaborative projects, including those involving multiple SIB Groups, are eligible.
  • Any type of output will be considered, including, but not limited to, peer-reviewed publications, resources, software tools, databases, videos, tutorials, outreach programmes and science advocacy initiatives. The output should have a clear link with SIB and clearly display the SIB affiliation.
  • The publication, release or event date of the submitted output should fall within the 2026 calendar year. Publications must be peer-reviewed; preprints are not eligible.
  • For updates to existing outputs, a clear explanation should be provided of how and why the update represents a major development, such as a step-change or substantial overhaul, rather than an incremental development in the usual life of the output.
  • The evaluation follows a peer assessment process. Each submission is reviewed and scored by at least one Award Committee member, who also seeks assessments from at least two suitable SIB Members with no conflict of interest with the submission. The final ranking and selection are made by the Award Committee, guided by these independent reviews.
  • The main criterion is the overall academic merit of the output, evaluated across multiple dimensions, including breakthrough character, usability/user-friendliness, sustainability/reproducibility, empowerment and overall contribution to the field of bioinformatics and computational biology.

Submissions must include:

  • An abstract (max. 350 words) describing the output and making a case for its overall merit
  • A URL to the output (if available)
  • An explanation of how the output is associated with SIB and how this association is indicated in the output
  • Evidence that the output was published, released or took place within the 2026 calendar year
  • The names of 3–5 SIB Members not associated with the work who could act as suggested reviewers
  • A logo or representative image of the output
