Data Repositories for Bioinformatics
03 September 2025
Are you working on a bioinformatic project generating data but have no idea where to deposit this data to make it open and FAIR? Are you looking for open data for a meta-analysis, to test a software tool or to use as a training set in a course? If so, this asynchronous e-learning course is for you. The course can be completed online, at the desired pace and in the absence of an instructor.
Overview
Every day, high-throughput life science data is generated and analysed by bioinformaticians. Science is based on reproducibility and the building on what others have done. For other researches to reproduce the results or re-use the data, the data must be open and FAIR. How do repositories play a role in the efficient management of bioinformatic data?
Repositories store data and the corresponding metadata, but what exactly is a repository? What type of data do repositories contain? Why deposit data in a data repository?
In this 1-h course, you will learn what a data repository is, what are the uses of bioinformatic data repositories, some well-known repositories, as well as how to find other repositories.
Audience
This e-learning course is for students, postdocs, researchers, and data managers from any scientific environment (academia, facilities, companies, etc.) who wish to learn about the use of data repositories in bioinformatics and where data can be deposited or retrieved for re-use.
Competencies
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Describe the use of data repositories in bioinformatic
- Identify where data can be deposited or retrieved for re-use
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:
- explain what a data repository is
- explore uses of data repositories
- recall commonly used bioinformatics data repositories
- find other data repositories
Prerequisites
Knowledge / competencies
Before the course, you should meet the learning outcomes of, or have taken, the e-learning course Metadata in Bioinformatics.
Technical
None.
Time required
1 hour
Instructions
- Open the module in a browser tab. As resources are constantly evolving, some of the images may not correspond to the current web site.
- Open a separate browser tab to carry out the exercises and be able to answer the quizzes.
- If you leave a module before the end, your score will be reset to 0.
