Want to learn about vocabularies and their use in bioinformatics? This asynchronous e-learning course can be completed online, at the desired pace and in the absence of an instructor.

Overview

Biology began as a largely descriptive science, which required a common understanding of what was being described. With the advent of bioinformatics and the application of computational methods to the large quantities of data generated, vocabularies began to be used to standardize descriptions in biology.

In this e-learning course, you will learn what a vocabulary is, the different types of vocabularies, their use and where to find them. Examples of commonly used vocabularies are presented to illustrate why you should use vocabularies to make your research data interoperable.

Audience

This e-learning course is for students, postdocs, and researchers, from any scientific environment (academia, facilities, companies, etc.) interested in vocabularies and their use in bioinformatic data sets.

Competencies

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe different types of vocabularies in bioinformatics
  • Understand why vocabularies are essential to data interoperability

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:

  • List the different types of vocabularies
  • Give examples of commonly used vocabularies
  • Describe uses of vocabularies
  • Find vocabularies
