Swiss Government funds are allocated to SIB Resources and Core facilities as per the recommendations of SIB’s external Scientific Advisory Board.

2 SIB received CHF 1.1 million of government funds for the SPHN Data Coordination Centre. In addition, SIB received CHF 4.5 million in
2020 for BioMedIT, out of which CHF 3.4 million were used for BioMedIT projects and nodes.

1 SIB’s Management and support teams (see previous figure). are financed by the Swiss government as well as through overheads on external funds. The groups having entrusted SIB with the management of their funds benefit from specific support in legal affairs, human resources and financial monitoring.

Sustained federal support

At the occasion of SIB's 20th birthday (1998-2018), we asked Mauro Dell'Ambrogio, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) what has made SIB eligible for federal funding over the past years and how was Switzerland positioned internationally regarding its bioinformatics infrastructure. He also gives us his vision of the field's main challenges for the next 20 years.
