A pioneer in bioinformatics

Amos Bairoch was emeritus professor at the University of Geneva and co-founder and group leader at SIB. His innovative and pioneering contributions to bioinformatics include:

  1. early 1980s

    introducing the idea of analysing DNA and protein sequences on personal computers instead of large, shared institutional mainframe computers;

  2. 1986

    creating the first Swiss-Prot release with nearly 4,000 curated protein sequence entries and the precursor to UniProt;

  3. 1988

    creating the PROSITE database of protein families and domains, which enables the identification of protein functions;

  4. 1990

    creating the ENZYME database, which became indispensable for the development of metabolic databases;

  5. 1993

    co-launching Expasy, the Swiss bioinformatics resource portal – the first life science web portal and among the first 150 websites in the world;

  6. 1998

    co-founding SIB (Swiss Insitute of Bioinformatics) to support the long-term stability of bioinformatics research in Switzerland;

  7. 2002

    co-founding UniProt the world’s leading high-quality, comprehensive, and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information, building on Swiss-Prot – since recognized as an ELIXIR Core Data Resource and Global Core Biodata Resource;

  8. 2011

    co-founding neXtProt, a knowledge platform for human proteins;

  9. 2012

    creating Cellosaurus, the first central knowledge resource for cell lines and since recognized as an ELIXIR Core Data Resource and Global Core Biodata Resource.
