Overview

This course offers guidance, ideas and tips for designing training/teaching, development and delivery on training activities, all based on research-driven educational principles. This course will cover 4 main topics:

  • learning principles and how they apply to education and training;
  • teaching techniques that can be used to enhance learner engagement and participation;
  • design of lessons, course and materials;
  • assessment and feedback in training and teaching.

Examples and discussions will also focus on the challenges presented by academic teaching.

Audience

This course is addressed to scientists:

  • with some to little or no teaching experience,
  • who want to become a teacher or a better one, and
  • who believe teaching is - or may become - a relevant aspect of their professional development.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:

  • tell which learning principles a good trainer should have in mind
  • describe at least three training techniques drawing on learning principles
  • design a training session and a course
  • develop assessment questionnaires
  • tell what types of material are needed for each part of a training session

Prerequisites

Knowledge / competencies

This course is designed for scientists with some to little or no teaching experience.

Technical

You don't need to bring a computer. It's all based on human interactions.
