In 2016, a “glycomics” section was introduced in the ExPASy server of the SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics to host a range of SIB-supported and external glycoinformatics resources. Since then, the collection is growing, as a reflection of active production in glycobiology.

This short webinar explains — and demonstrates — the use of GlyConnect (https://glyconnect.expasy.org), the main glycoinformatics database hosted at SIB. It contains information on glycoproteins and their associated glycans. The SARS-CoV-2 spike protein was shown to be heavily glycosylated and as data is released, it is included in GlyConnect to highlight the latest knowledge on coronavirus glycobiology. This information can be browsed and visualised with dedicated tools such as GlyConnect-Compozitor (https://glyconnect.expasy.org/compozitor/)

All the resources presented are the work of the Proteome Informatics Group of SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics. This webinar is given by Frédérique Lisacek, head of the Proteome Informatics Group and glycoinformatician. Frédérique has already lectured at SIB several times.

Structure

A tour of the glycoinformatics resources with information relevant to human infection by SARS-CoV-2 will be presented.

This will be followed by a Question and Answer (Q&A) session.

Audience

PhD students, postdocs and other researchers, from any scientific environment (academia, facilities, companies, etc.) interested in COVID-19 data.

This webinar should be of interest to any researcher who aims to use viral glycobiology data, including purely experimental researchers. It will be of particular interest to biologists and bioinformatic researchers that analyze viral glycobiology data in their work.

Learning objectives

At the end of this webinar, the participants will be able to:

  • Access the glycobiology information relevant to COVID-19.
  • Understand the current knowledge on coronavirus glycobiology.
  • Use the data provided.
  • Understand publicly available glycan data.

Prerequisites

Knowledge / competencies

All the resources are web-based. No particular bioinformatics competencies are required.

Participants may wish to view the YouTube video When virology meets glycobiology and read the open access paper A Bioinformatics View of Glycan-Virus Interactions.

Technical

This webinar will be streamed, you are thus required to have your own computer with an internet connection.

Venue and Time

This webinar will be streamed to registered participants, and more information will be sent in due time.

The webinar will start at 14:00 CET and end around 15:00 CET.

Application

Attendance is free-of-charge, however registration is mandatory.

You will be informed by email of your registration confirmation.
