Overview

Delivering excellent training is a challenge in any domain, and bioinformatics is no exception. Excellent training requires good planning and careful thinking, just like a well-formulated research plan. This workshop will be a forum to learn general best practices in how to establish successful bioinformatics courses, with particular emphasis on continuing education. The course is an ELIXIR course organized by ELIXIR-CH and ELIXIR-IT, with support from ELIXIR-EXCELERATE funds.

Audience

ELIXIR Train-the-Trainer courses are addressed to both scientists with some experience in training and scientists with little or no previous experience, who believe teaching is a relevant aspect of their professional development and is or may become important in their career.

Learning objectives

At the end of the course attendees will:

  • Get acquainted with learning principles and how they apply to training
  • Be able to select and utilise training techniques that can be used to enhance learner engagement and participation
  • Learn about session, course, and materials design
  • Learn how to use assessment and feedback in training

The participants will be asked to prepare a report as assignment, to be returned in the two weeks after the course.

Learning outcomes

  • Learners can tell which learning principles a good trainer should have in mind
  • Learners can describe at least three training techniques drawing on learning principles
  • Learners can design a training session and a course
  • Learners can develop assessment questionnaires
  • Learners can tell what types of material are needed for each part of a training session
