Software Carpentry workshop
15 June 2016
For-profit: 0 CHF
No future instance of this course is planned yet
Overview
Software Carpentry's mission is to help scientists and engineers get more research done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic lab skills for scientific computing. This hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation. Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.
During this course participants will learn about:
- Automating tasks with the Unix shell
- Building programs with Python
- Version control with Git
- Managing data with SQL
More detailed information and registration here: https://swissbib.github.io/2016-06-23-basel/
Audience
The course is aimed at graduate students and other researchers. You don't need to have any previous knowledge of the tools that will be presented at the workshop.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Automate repetitive tasks [shell scripts]
- Write computer programs for data analysis and other tasks [python programming]
- Use version control to keep track of their work, make it reproducible and share it with others ("open science") [git and GitHub]
- Use database tools to manage large amounts of data [SQL]
Prerequisites
Participants must bring a wifi enabled laptop with a few specific software packages installed (listed here). They are also required to abide by Software Carpentry's Code of Conduct.
Application
The registration fees are 20 CHF.
The course is full.
