The MSD Musculoskeletal Data Science and Neuromuscular research teams are seeking a talented Computational Biology Post-doctoral fellow to investigate the molecular underpinning of the benefits of physical exercise intervention.
Health benefits of exercise are numerous and well established. Beyond counteracting age related musculoskeletal system wasting, exercise can prevent or mitigate many cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological diseases. We are taking an integrative systems biology approach, building comprehensive multi-dimensional molecular maps of exercise response and identifying and validating signaling pathways and molecular mediators of the effect of exercise. In collaboration with our academic partners, we have generated large-scale molecular profiles of exercising human subjects and rodent models including careful clinical or pre-clinical assessments. We use a palette of computational biology methods to derive novel hypotheses testable in the laboratory. You will work in close collaboration with wet-lab experts on relevant biology, and use innovative computational approaches to combine and contextualize data from state-of-the-art exercise-relevant systems.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in statistical data mining applied to biological systems, with experience integrating multi-omics data to generate testable hypotheses in the lab. He/She will have an inquisitive mindset, a proactive attitude and the desire to work in a multi-disciplinary team. She/he will join a vibrant scientific community and collaborate with other postdoctoral fellows mentored by a range of scientists across disciplines and platforms, including chemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, functional genomics, neurophysiology and translational medicine. Postdoctoral scholars at NIBR have a unique opportunity to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research and are expected to publish their results in leading journals. The postdoctoral term is up to 4 years.

Profile requirements

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computational science or biology (PhD students in the last year of their thesis work, are eligible to apply)
  • Extensive experience integrating and visualizing mammalian multi-omics data-types
  • Proficient in programming in R or Python, good knowledge of statistical modeling and ability to query databases and munge data
  • Strong publication record
  • Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills
  • Candidate must be able to work independently as well as with interdisciplinary teams
  • High learning agility, developed scientific curiosity and a desire to stay up to date with the latest computational and digital technologies
  • Fluency in written and oral English
