sante persoAt the occasion of SIB's 20th anniversary and of the recent launch of the SantéPerso initiative and platform (see box), the role of bioinformatics in the personalized health context is in the spotlight, with two interviews.

SIB Executive Director Ron Appel looks back on twenty years of Swiss bioinformatics, and points out the shift in the domain: from working primarily with life scientists - by developing databases and software or conducting analyses - to developing tools used directly in clinics, and therefore for the direct benefit of citizens (read the full interview - in French).

"Today, bioinformatics is a science that contributes to improving the lives of citizens, patients and the environment"

SIB Clinical Bioinformatics project manager Aitana Lebrand retraces her career path - from physics to bioinformatics - and explains her role today, which includes optimizing genetic sequencing methods for infectious diseases, by working with doctors, biologists or computer scientists (read the full interview - in French).

"Together, we are trying to find solutions to harmonize practices, develop new tools or meet clinical bioinformatics training needs"

About the SantéPerso initiative

The "Personalized Health & Society" initiative (SantéPerso) is based on research projects and an information and exchange platform. It aims to nurture and stimulate debate on tomorrow's health issues. Precision medicine, high throughput sequencing, genomics, risk profiles, quantified self... The unprecedented discoveries and technological advances made in recent years are changing the landscape of health and care. All concerned, citizens must be stakeholders in this change. Santé PerSo offers them the opportunity to get informed and discuss the vast theme of personalized health. The initiative also aims to bring together experts involved in the various fields inherent to this theme, and to support original initiatives conducted in French-speaking Switzerland.
