Discovery in bowel cancer research might raise healing chances and survival rates

Scientists have shown that bowel cancer can be classified as four distinct diseases – each with a different diagnosis. The study results have been published in Nature Medicine. This knowledge will likely help develop personalized treatment options and improve patient survival.
Bowel cancer or colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most frequent cancers and unfortunately today still leads to the death of the patient in about half of the cases. The outcome and the response to drug treatment vary substantially from one patient to another.

Study Examines Association of Genetic Variants with Cognitive Impairment

Individually rare but collectively common intermediate-size copy number variations may be negatively associated with educational attainment, according to a study in the May 26 issue of JAMA. Copy number variations (CNVs) are regions of the genome that differ in the number of segments of DNA.

ELIXIR accelerates with major Horizon 2020 funding

ELIXIR has been awarded €19 million from the EU to accelerate the implementation of Europe’s life-science data infrastructure over the next four years. Common breast cancer mutation induces multipotency and tumour heterogeneity

Understanding how different cell populations arise within a tumour – so-called tumour heterogeneity – is widely regarded as a major challenge for cancer biology.

Mohamed Bentires-Alj and his group at the FMI have discovered how the most frequent mutation in human breast cancer leads to tumour heterogeneity. The PI3-kinase mutation forces cells back into a dedifferentiated, stem-like state from which tumours containing cells of various lineages can develop. These results have been published in Nature.

New possibilities for the treatment of breast cancer arise with the help of mathematics

Researchers of three of Switzerland’s leading scientific institutions have brought to light a means of reprogramming a flawed immune response into an efficient anti-tumoral one by the results of a translational trial relating to breast cancer. Thanks to the innovative combination of mathematical modelization and experimentation, only 20 tests were necessary, whereas traditional experimentation would have required 596 tests to obtain the same results.
